Isotope Geochemistry

The fixed-term contract is for the purpose of academic qualification in accordance with § 2(1) of the WissZeitVG (Act on Fixed-Term Contracts in Academia). The Faculty of Geosciences at the University of Bremen is an internationally established research and teaching institution. It covers the full spectrum of modern geosciences, offers five predominantly English taught degree programmes (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) with a focus on applied, marine and materials sciences, and maintains close scientific cooperation with non-university research institutions. Together with the Research Faculty MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, Bremen is a leading international research location in the field of marine sciences.

The position is based within the Isotope Geochemistry Research Group at the Faculty of Geosciences and MARUM. The research focuses on the geochemical evolution of the Earth and the Oceans. Research will focus primarily on the application of isotope geochemical methods to geoscientific questions and related analytical and instrumental developments. The infrastructure of the Isotope Geochemistry Research Group includes a mass spectrometry laboratory equipped with a thermal ionization mass spectrometer (Triton) and a multi-collector ICP mass spectrometer (Neptune), as well as chemistry laboratories, including a cleanroom laboratory (PicoTrace).

Your responsibilities:

  1. Academic teaching duties of 4 SWS (including the teaching of specialist knowledge and practical skills, as well as instruction in the application of academic methods within bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in accordance with the relevant course content, and, where applicable, teaching support in the form of subject-specific instruction for other teaching units)
  2. Academic research services, participation in research projects, including:
    • Development of independent research projects related to group focal area
    • Collaboration on research projects and High-Profile Areas ( areas) within the Faculty of Geosciences and at MARUM
    • Active involvement in the technical management of laboratory facilities
    • Active involvement in the supervision of student assistants, undergraduates, research assistants and visiting researchers
    • Publication of research findings in internationally renowned journals
  3. The opportunity to produce own scientific work (e.g., a habilitation thesis or equivalent work)
  4. Other university duties, such as participation in academic self- governance

Your qualifications:

  • A completed scientific degree (M.Sc. or equivalent qualification) in the field of geosciences or analytical chemistry
  • A completed and relevant PhD in the field of Geosciences
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in the operation of a multi-collector ICP mass spectrometer and/or a thermal ionization mass spectrometer
  • Knowledge and experience in the preparation of silicate and carbonate materials under cleanroom conditions (ISO class 6 to = 4)
  • Ability to conduct independent research with a track record of regular publication
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Ability to work in a team as well as a high reliability, sense of responsibility and willingness to cooperate
